The Michigan Tech Huskies took hope the Mason Cup this weekend after defeating Bemidji State 2-1 this past Friday in Bemidji, Minnesota. This marks Tech’s first ever Mason Cup win since joining the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
Members of the Mitch’s Misfits, the Michigan Tech dedicated student section and the Huskies Pep Band accompanied the team to Bemidji to cheer on the team during the game.
The first goal of the game came from Bemidji just past the 14 minute mark followed less than a minute later by a Michigan Tech to tie it up at the end of the first period. A total of 14 shots-on-goal from MTU and 7 from BSU.
The second period saw Michigan Tech take the lead just short of 9 minutes. Bemidji closed the gap on shots with a total of 18 at the end of the second period, compared to Michigan Tech’s 21 but Tech kept their lead.
Fifteen minutes into the third period Michigan Tech received the first and only penalty of the game, a minor for boarding, but was able to hold on for the penalty kill. With 1:48 left in the third period Bemidji pulled their goaly but was not able to tie up the game before the end of the period, keeping the final score at 2-1 Michigan Tech.
By winning the Mason Cup the Huskies have guaranteed themselves a slot in the NCAA tournament, playing against Boston College in Providence, Rhode Island on Friday, March 29th.
